Tsitsipas wins Gstaad for his first title in 16 months
Stefanos Tsitsipas won the EFG Swiss Open in Gstaad on Sunday, beating Raphael Collignon 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3. It is his 13th ATP title and his first since Dubai in February 2025.
He came into the week ranked No. 85, a long way down for a player who was No. 3 in the world three years ago. The win moves him up 34 places in the ATP rankings, back toward the top 50, and makes him one of the lowest-ranked champions Gstaad has ever had.
A run built the hard way
The draw did not do him any favors. Tsitsipas went through three seeds to reach the final, and he needed a deciding set in most of his matches. He beat fifth seed Ignacio Buse 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 32, survived Swiss wild card Jerome Kym 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(5) in the round of 16, then beat fourth seed Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semis he got past Aleksandr Shevchenko 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Collignon made him earn it
Collignon was a worthy opponent in the final. The 24-year-old Belgian, seeded seventh, had one of the best weeks of his career. He beat third seed Valentin Vacherot and Lorenzo Sonego earlier in the draw, and in the semifinals he saved a match point against Juan Manuel Cerundolo, coming back from 1-6, 3-5 down to win 1-6, 7-6(5), 7-5.
The final followed a similar pattern. Tsitsipas took the opening set 6-4, but Collignon hung around and forced a tiebreak in the second, winning it 7-3 to level the match. Gstaad's clay plays fast, and a single break can decide a set, so the third was tight throughout. Tsitsipas got the break he needed and served it out 6-3. Why this one matters
For Tsitsipas, the result matters more than the size of the tournament suggests. He has spent close to two years drifting away from the level he used to take for granted, and the ranking reflected it. Winning a title, any title, means putting five good days together in a row, and he had not managed that in a long time. Gstaad gave him that, and a ranking jump to show for it.
Collignon leaves with a runner-up finish and a career week: two seeds beaten, a match point saved, and a first tour-level final at 24. He will climb the rankings too.
The talent was never in doubt with Tsitsipas. The results are what had gone missing, and in Gstaad they finally showed up again.
