How are ATP rankings calculated?

ATP rankings use a rolling 52-week points total. Players earn points based on results at Grand Slams, Masters 1000s, 500s, and 250s. The best results count, and points expire exactly one year after they were earned.

How do ranking points expire?

Points drop off on a rolling 52-week basis. If a player earned points at a tournament last year, those points expire the Monday after that same tournament concludes this year. Rankings shift constantly as new results are added and old ones fall off.

Elo is a skill-based rating system originally designed for chess. Unlike ATP ranking points, Elo adjusts after every match based on the opponent's strength. Beating a top-10 player gains more rating than beating someone ranked 100th. Smashrs tracks Elo ratings on every player profile alongside official ATP rankings.

ATP rankings are based on tournament participation and results over 52 weeks. They reward consistency and scheduling. Elo ratings measure pure skill by weighting each win and loss by opponent strength. A player can be ranked higher in ATP points but lower in Elo if they play more tournaments against weaker fields.
