Professional tennis is organized into tiers, and the tier a match is played at changes both the quality of the field and how much reliable data exists on each player.
The ladder
- ATP Tour / WTA Tour are the top men's and women's circuits (250, 500, 1000, and the four Grand Slams). The strongest fields and the deepest data.
- ATP Challenger Tour is the men's second tier, where rising players and fringe tour regulars compete for ranking points and main-tour entry.
- ITF World Tennis Tour is the entry level for both men and women (often labelled M15/M25 for men, W15/W35 for women, by prize money). This is where most pros begin.
